Citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille prison during the French Revolution freeing seven prisoners and branding the memory of Bastille Day henceforth (1789) An amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning gay marriage failed in the US Senate by a vote of 50-48 (2004)   And, on this day in 1984, David Lange led his Labour party to a landslide victory in New Zealand with his flagship policy to ban nuclear weapons from Kiwi shores.
